REVIEW: McDSP Futzbox, DE555, NF575

Pardon the poor quality of the video. Things didn’t work out really as it should’ve this time. I’ll try to improve it more the next time.

When McDSP first announced that they would release the three new plug-ins Futzbox, DE555 and NF575 I was very excited. After all, three new plug-ins from McDSP is basically christmas to me as I consider them to be one of the absolute top plug-in developers in the audio business. As the release approached I actually got a little worried that the plug-ins had lost the race against the competition before they had even arrived at the starting line. The verdict?

There is something to be said about simplicity

I’m a passionate disciple of evolution, not least in software. With that said, while dozens of new strange controls can help create a new innovation, sparsely decorated interfaces are sometimes preferred. One great example of this is the McDSP ML4000 in it’s ML1, one-band limiter form. It’s my go-to limiter because, besides sounding great, I never need to do as much tweaking as with other limiters. Usually it’s just a matter of turning one or two knobs quickly and be over with it.

While this might seem like pure advertising for McDSP, it should more be considered a message to developers saying “simplify dammit!”. Simplicity gets you a very long way… Sometimes.

McDSP celebrates 10 years (and offers you to dig into the past)

As of October 2008 McDSP can celebrate 10 years in the biz. Founded by Colin McDowell in 1998, McDSP is one of the oldest plug-in manufacturers in the industry. Since the start McDSP has been Pro Tools only and has, at least to me, been one of the arguments to mix on this platform. They’re one of my favorite plug-in companies so I’ll take this time to congratulate them and say thanks for your products!

For the October special McDSP let’s you buy the HD and Native Classic Pack Bundle at a price of $995/$495 respectively. The Classic Pack Bundle includes Analog Channel, CompressorBank, FilterBank and MC2000. Offer ends October 31, 2008.

To me, these older or “classic” plug-ins are slightly different animals than the new breed. You can push them more. A little like real hardware. It’s one thing I miss in the new plug-ins, but obviously everyone didn’t like it.

AES news and rumors

Already time for AES again! Man, time flies. Unfortunately I won’t be attending it this year. The worst part about that isn’t necessarily that I can’t go around molesting the latest gear, but that I’ll miss all the kickass parties I’ve been invited to! Oh well. I’ll of course do my best to cover the news, and hopefully some friendly dude or dudette will supply me with some floor footage as well (if you’re going and is interested, let me know).

In the meantime, here are some of the AES news that have dropped into my mailbox over the last few weeks.

All McDSP native plug-ins are included in this special – Analog Channel, Channel G, Chrome Tone, CompressorBank, DE555, FilterBank, FutzBox, MC2000, ML4000, NF575, Revolver and Synthesizer One. McDSP special for june: Futzbox Native

This months special from McDSP is the offer to buy FutzBox Native for $295. Futzbox is a distortion and noise generator, with filters, gate, bitcrushing and simulations of cellphones, radios, etc., etc. Futzbox HD is available for $495 and in the Emerald Pack HD bundle. Apart from this June special, Futzbox Native can only be purchased within the Emerald Pack Native bundle. This offer ends June 30, 2008. McDSP ships new Emerald Pack with three new plug-ins

McDSP has released Emerald Pack 3.0 (HD and Native) to include the new DE555 De-esser, FutzBox Lo-Fi Distortion Effects, and NF575 Noise Filter plug-ins. Emerald Pack 3.0 also includes existing products; Analog Channel, Channel G, Chrome Tone, CompressorBank, FilterBank, MC2000, ML4000, Revolver and Synthesizer One.

The DE555 is a de-esser destined to be put up against SuprEsser, E2deesser and the coming Massey de-esser. The NF575 Noise Filter is a high-resolution filter to remove noise from audio. Huh? Shouldn’t it be the other way around? But it is! FutzBox is a distortion and noise generator plug-in for lo-fi.

Review coming up.

McDSP is also running two offers this month.

  • Purchase or upgrade to Emerald Pack HD 3.0 and be eligible to purchase Emerald Pack Native 3.0 for only $995, saving $600 over retail price.
  • The Project Studio LE bundle special ($295) is also extended into May.
