Jon at Audio Geek Zine gave me the tip the moment I managed to roll out of bed and turned on the computer that Massey has now released his much awaited De:esser. As is common with Massey plug-ins, you can download an almost fully functional demo and use it for however long you want. If you want the save functionality, multi-mono support and a few other features, you’ll have to shell out $89. Not a large sum of money at all for a plug-in, but it’s on the more side when it comes to Massey.
I’m downloading it and will be back later this week with a comparative review. In the meantime go download it yourself and give it a go, or you can stick around here and read more about it (in the case of XP users, your almost forced to do so since you’ll have to wait for your release until August).

It’s no longer just a rumor or a pipe dream, the awaited Massey de-esser is soon coming. The pictures filename happens to be ds50 if you’re interested in name speculation, personally I find feature speculation much more interesting. From what I can tell it looks like a really simple design, which I suppose is staying true to the Massey heritage. It’s also in contrast to the latest breed of de-essers, like the E2deesser and the SuprEsser.

RTAS/TDM plug-ins can be damn expensive as we’ve seen been discussed this week. But don’t fall into the trap of believing that you need to shell out big sums of money for a good setup of plug-ins. Here’s is one list of good plug-ins if you’re on a budget.

There are many good plug-ins out there. Some, however, stand out as great and get much more use than others. Here are five of them!

Massey is on a roll with his Massey Tools. The latest version includes besides the Talkback that I’ve posted about earlier, a WetDry + Mono -> Stereo, and a M/S encoder + decoder plug-in.

Massey has updated his Massey Tools to v0.3.1 and added a new plug-in to it. It’s a talkback mic controller. It mutes the audio channel whenever the transport is rolling or if the volume level exceeds a set threshold.

A while back it came out that McDSP and Massey, two of the last companies that makes Pro Tools only plug-ins, would make AU versions as well. Yesterday rumors started floating that both of these companies had ditched those plans (which of course started a whole new set of rumors about Digidesign being an evil empire and that the latest ICON would actually be more powerful than the Deathstar).
Massey indeed confirmed in an email and on his website that the AUs had been thrown in the bin. Mr McDowell at McDSP on the other hand simply said it wasn’t true. Or in his own words “Boy that would be news to me. And that guy we hired from Apple might be bummed too”.

The Massey TD5 tape delay have been known for quite some time now, and it’s existence was in fact first mentioned here at ProTooler. Massey have since then had a checklist on his website so everyone could follow the progress of the plug-in, and let me tell you that I’m not the only one who’s been waiting for it to come out. Finally it’s released, and of course we’re quick with the review.

Holy cow, have a lot of people waited for this plug-in or what? ProTooler was first to break the story that Steve Massey was working on the tape delay, and I’m very grateful to him for telling me about it in the first place, since then it’s been all eager anticipation.
Go get it! I’ll review it A.S.A.P.
