It’s been a while since I posted anything about the rebuild I’m doing. If you thought I was done, you’re wrong. Softube and Marshall.

My trip to the US has been pretty cool. I’ve met a drunk bartender who wanted us to go party with Tenacious D, hung out with some great engineers and producers, heard studio anecdotes about Alice Cooper and Lemmy, talked to Mikkey Dee without knowing it was him, seen some cool stuff, met some cool people and got a little too drunk way too many times.

After not being entirely pleased with the D-Command I started looking in different directions. While the D-Command looked like a solid piece of gear for pure mixing, it wasn’t exactly what I wanted as I do just as much composing.

When I attended the D-Command demo I felt that it was pretty much this or I had to settle with a regular controller and the keyboard. I just don’t think there’s much that interesting in the mid-range and I don’t have the budget for something like a D-Control. Then I remembered something – the Smart AV Tango.

A while ago I visited Avid/Digidesign to get a proper D-Command ES demo. I’ve fiddled with them a little, but if I’m going to spend the dough I’ll want an experienced user showing me around. I got to spend some time with it and even though I had no way near as much time to write a proper review of it I figured I should at least share my experience with you.

And it’s that I believe I would actually be better at making music if I didn’t care for gear.

If I didn’t care about what gear I used I would simply have gone to the store and bought a basic setup under the recommendation of someone that probably 1) didn’t have any real clue about what is good and what is not, and 2) would patronize me by saying that I – as in me – certainly could do well enough with gear all costing under $100 each.

Despite how much I despise that kind of attitude (and it’s very common in music stores here) he would be somewhat right. I would probably go home with my new ’studio’, sit down and record. If I couldn’t record a great song I would do the healthy thing and study the arrangement, maybe ask myself why the guitar is interfering with the lead vocal or whatever.

I still do that sometimes, and I try to do that as much as possible, but I’m painfully aware that I – like so many others reading blogs such as this and are active at the same forums that I am – start thinking about what preamps they need to figure out that lead vocal and guitar sound instead.

It’s time for a new series of articles. I’ll make up a name for them at a later point. As for now, we’ll just call it the great rebuild. We’re talking about my home spot.
