Back to reality…

And your son’s on crack… Wait a minute, wrong song.

Summertime is over for me and so is my pseudo-vacations with its less than usual blogging, family reunions, trips and just a wee bit work on top of that.

The coming weeks I’ll spend a fair amount of time on reviews as promised earlier. For this month I think I’ll try to focus on the limiter shootout but some other stuff will probably slip in there as well.

The feature I request today is… Smart knobs in the mixer

I’m currently giving Reaper a go and one of the coolest features in my opinion is the possibility to add any plug-in control to a knob in the mixer on the channel the plug-in is instantiated on. Basically, each channel has a number of ’smart knobs’ that you could for instance assign the threshold of the compressor on or the channel or the frequency of your EQ. This way you can adjust those parameters without opening the GUI of the plug-in.

I think this is a very clever way to solve what I find most annoying about in the box mixing, dealing with the most common things such as tweaking your EQ’s. I’m going to set up a template in Reaper where I basically have a channel EQ that never needs to be opened. Some kind of similar thing in Pro Tools would be awesome.

There’s something to be said about preamps

So I set out to find myself two more channels of high-end preamps. I usually prefer to use dynamics or ribbons over condensers, which of course shows in my choice of preamps.

Reviews… How many of them do you read? How many of them do you believe? Personally I find them close to useless when it comes to audio products.

Taking a walk- part 1

So… After a couple of hours at the Musikmesse I’ve only seen a small part of what this shows has to offer. I’m mostly saying “hi” to people I know, book video demo’s (will hopefully have a bunch for you later!) and trying to find the products that truly kick ass.

The quality of plug-ins

When I had my morning coffee today I had a discussion someone regarding plug-ins. Having used plug-ins for quite some time now, I think it’s interesting to look back and remember how they were years ago and what they’re like now.
