Did someone at Avid get dropped on the head? Something strange is going on here… They’re actually previewing upcoming features of a new Pro Tools version. Check the video above.
The last few major upgrades of Pro Tools have been amazing. Pro Tools 8 gave us a much better interface, much better MIDI, tons of new FX and instruments to play with and much, much more. Pro Tools 9 pretty much scrapped the idea of LE altogether, got EuCon support and more.
Pro Tools 10, if that is what it will be, seems to be all about speed – a direction that I strongly embrace. Key points here involve:
* Region-based volume controls. This is a biggie. The levels here are independent of the mixer levels. What’s the big deal? Why not just use automation? Because you don’t have to! You can still change the global levels in the mixer. I’ve sometimes used the Trim plugin as a similar workaround.
* Real time fades. Hopefully this means we get less lost files and questions regarding if we want Pro Tools to automatically create new fades or not. But the big deal here is actually how the fades are now implemented, look at the video.
* RAM loading (in lack of a better term). I admit my technological knowledge has reached its limits here but does this mean we will not have to deal with buffersize bullshit errors anymore? My other big question is how much RAM will be needed?
* Handles. The good kind, not love handles. This has been a requested feature for some time.
Here is also a (very) short clip of what’s supposedly an upcoming Eucon feature.
What do you guys think? What would you like to see?

[...] Except for this second one of Tom Graham discussing the new Pro Tools features that I’ve previously posted about. [...]
You used the TRIM plugin for that? I always used the GAIN plugin
all I care about is 64 bit so I can load up a few more plugins and those stupid buffer playback errors to stop. so inconsistent and so easily caused by the slightest spike. Hope this ram loading helps.
I know we are all throwing tons of RAM at our computers now, but if we are caching sessions to RAM won’t that affect virtual instruments use of it to store samples?
Jan:
dominic, Matt C: I assume it will be 64-bit. It doesn’t make sense to load a lot into the RAM otherwise.
Am I the only one that is thinking, “why can’t they record their presentation in Pro Tools on another machine and use THAT audio for this video rather than the noisy crappy camera audio?”
LOVE the clip based gain “future” feature.
Stiff: I would not assume 64 bit there. They’re saying the disk cache would be using RAM outside of Pro Tools in the second vid you posted. Besides, that should be a bigger announcement than Audiosuite handles getting processed. Although maybe it’s because of the IBC/Post slant of all this. IMHO – 64 Bit isn’t really an improvement for Post, it means buying new plugins and no one in Post has money for that!
Next generation DSP cards.
Hi Clinton, who’s “they”?
Region volume is the best!!!!! so happy about that one, editing vocals will be sooo much faster now
At first i was like “awesome, love this!”
But then i was like ” the only things i liked in this video was region volume and realtime fades.”
I hope this is not pro tools 10. A major update of pro tools should feel like when pro tools got updated from 7.4 to 8. Not like 8.05 to 9.
Sure PT9 gave some nice features, but was the drop of the hardware and automatic delay compensation really that big of a deal to call it PT9?
Not in my book. I love Pro Tools though, I use it everyday!
This is not the final version of Pro Tools 10, just a few features under development.
The plugin browser menus should look like racks of gear in thumbnail form. NI introduced this years ago in Guitar Rig. I’m sick of reading lists of plugin names… show a damn mini icon of them, for pity sake.
