Loud and Avid announce licensing agreement

Earlier this year Mackie showed the world that they had cracked the Digi code and that Pro Tools M-Powered could be run without Avid interfaces but with a Mackie one instead. Now it’s official, Loud (owners of Mackie) and Avid has signed an agreement that licenses the use of the Onyx-i series with Pro Tools M-Powered 8.

I can’t help but wonder what this means for the future. Is this is an indication of Avid opening up Pro Tools? The press release certainly indicates that:

Avid has made openness a key component of its ongoing strategy, and this agreement with LOUD is a perfect example of how we continue to open up our ecosystem. As joint developers of the HUI protocol, Avid and LOUD have a history of working productively together, and we’re pleased to be working together on this latest endeavor to provide our customers with more choice and flexibility when it comes to unleashing their creativity.

This is the words of Chris Gahagan, Senior Vice President of Products at Avid.

Does this mean that Avid will let other companies in as well? Or is it just a matter of Avid making the best of the unexpected and probably unwanted situation that Mackie found a way around the Digi code?

Anyway, to run M-Powered with your Mackie mixer you’ll have to pay $49.99 for the Mackie Universal Driver.

  4. uhhh… Avid is just bypassing the courts and legal action by doin’ the licensing agreement with Loud. I guess that’s good for you, Avid. I just hope you’re getting a good deal.

Hey Avid, while you’re at it… why don’t you do some licensing agreements with Native Instruments or Novation so I could run Pro Tools with my KORE or XIOSynth, ay?

  5. Avid folks: If openess is the new key: Why don’t you implement the full eucon protocol in your whole current controller range AND implement it FULL in all PT versions!? That would be a killer!
