I got a press release from Apogee saying they will no longer develop products for the Microsoft Windows platform. Actually, I first got a press release saying they had discontinued Windows support, but a correction was sent stating it was development that would cease.
What ever could be the reason for this?
From the Apogee press release:
Apogee has made this decision in order to focus all research, development, and support resources on the Apple platform with its unparalleled power and stability. Apple offers a wide range of affordable, powerful desktop and laptop solutions ideally suited for music creation and audio production
Besides being a real punch in the face to Windows users (if the user in question decides to take his computer choice personal), I don’t buy the argument. Apogee got in bed with Apple with the Ensemble and the Duet (speaking of which, anyone noticed the new very Apple-esque website). I’m thinking there’s more to this than just Mac’s “unparalleled power”.
By the way, I emailed the press contact at Apogee to ask about the reasons, as well as asking about the future of Pro Tools HD systems on Windows with Apogee converters, but I haven’t received a response (that’s why this post is a few hours ‘late’). If they the decide to respond I’ll follow this up.
In a way Windows users should be used to this by now. Not that Apogee is owned by Apple yet, but I remember more than a few Logic users that were quite pissed when Apple just killed Windows support. If you recall, the ‘alliance’ between Apple and Euphonix emerged at about the same time. I think we must also ask what will happen to the Euphonix Artist series, which to my understanding is not yet supported on PC, though I recall hearing from someone at Euphonix that they would be at some point. This was a long time ago. Will Apple even make sure that the MC Pro support is dropped for Windows?
Back to Apogee, of course you’ll still be able to use the converters via AES, optical, or S/PDIF. Apogee also says technical support will continue to support legacy Windows configurations installed on Windows XP Service Pack 2.

Why does the “new very apple-esque” link point to: http://www.protoolerblog.com/?

But I can’t say that I am disappointed as a mac user. That’ll teach ‘m windows users
what unparalled apple woer=? apple is the same hardware than windows…

Uh-oh, I smell conspiracy!
Protoolerblog announced that they will drop windows support
I can’t imagine there is a large Apogee / PC user base. When’s the last time you saw that combination in a studio? Seriously. Think about it. Picture every studio you’ve been in with Apogee converters. Now, look just to the left. Yup. A Mac.
I’m sure keeping up with Windows / Vista, etc. is a real R&D drag and probably presents a drain on the staffing budget. It’s a rough economy and at a certain point, it becomes a zero sum circumstance. Better to make a clean break and declare it clearly.
I bet you Apogee are sighing with relief just to be able to say it out loud. “We don’t care about Windows anymore!”
while I dont think that you can hold Windows users responsible for how Microsoft develop their operating system and thus punishing them by terminating development on a certain array, I can state, as a developer: That developing for the Windows platform is absolutely no fun at all. The OS is a mess and does not aspire to break barriers and go the extra mile to accomplish perfection.
Digi should do this.
Digi should do this.
Digi should do this.
Mox, ain’t gonna happen. There are way too many LE users on Windows systems.
Stiff, yeah I realise that
But it would be good to go back ‘to the good old days’… when Digi only supported Mac’s.
Would free up a lot of resources you gotta admit
drive windows xp intel dual core for program protols 8 rtas
I blame vista! We’ll see what happens when windows 7 hits.
