I’ve had tremendous problems playing back regular sounds from my 003 since I installed Pro Tools 8 and Leopard. It seemed like the Mac simply wouldn’t recognize the interface. Even if I could see it in the in and out preferences and select it there, I noticed that it really hadn’t been “found” by the computer. In case you’ve suffered the same fate, here’s what I’ve done to solve it.
First of all, it was easy to see if the interface was properly detected or not. By first choosing the built-in speakers as the outputs you’ll see a volume control and a balance control (pan). By choosing the 003, the balance should be removed and the volume greyed out. This is alright, and the way it’s supposed to be.

Mine is in Swedish, yours is probably not.
If it on the other hand is not removed, and you can in fact see the balance and move the volume control, your Mac hasn’t properly detected the hardware. The solution for me was found on the DUC. I didn’t save the thread, so I can’t give props to the one who posted the solution, but I think it was the DigiTechSupport anyway.

Simply find and delete these files (don’t forget to empty the trash!) and then reboot.
1. Mac HD > Users > (Your User Name) > Library > Preferences > com.apple.systempreferences.plist
2. Mac HD > Users > (Your User Name) > Library > Preferences > com.apple.audio.AudioMIDISetup.plist
3. Mac HD > Users > (Your User Name) > Library > Preferences > com.digidesign.CoreAudioManager.plist
This worked for me, at least today. We’ll see what happens once I’ve done a couple of reboots, updated Leopard and ran a few sessions. I still think Digi Core Audio driver is a piece of shit.

Now, this is where I go: You tell ‘m brother!!!
Thanks for sharing Stiff-man.
Here’s hoping though that (I) don’t have the same problem when I get the upgrade (002R)
I started to not use core audio. Simply use the onboard soundcard attached into the aux input of my digi003. Of course the full and good solution would be a proper working coreaudio driver.
I’ll try your method soon.
Thanks
Trashing prefs has been a good memedy since mac OS9. I remember trashing digiprefs before. Yep, back in the good old days… Which brings me to wishing ya all a very fine end of the year!!! Be carefull with foreworks….
I also think its a piece of shit. I’ve had digitechsupport blame leopard a lot for its behavior… here’s to hoping they can get it right with 10.6
