Mixing on a budget – part 2

So you’re out of money and still want more? Here are the freebies I could find.

Flux Bitter-sweet II, a transient designer well worth the money.
TriTone Colortone free and Phasetone. Haven’t really used these.
Linplug used to have a free version of their Alpha synth but I couldn’t find it at their website now.
Fxpansion Orca is acually a cool little synth. It’s not very flexible though.
iZotope Vinyl. I’ve used this a lot.
Roger Nichols Digital Inspector Free. Free metering.
Sonalksis Free G. Free metering. Have no idea what to use it for.
PSP Audioware VintageMeter – free metering that I’ve never used, and PianoVerb which I think is discontinued
KeyToSound Remedy. Synthesizer for the poor.
KV331 Synthmaster free. Synthesizer for the poor. Will be replaced by a demo version with a later upgrade.
Brainworx bx_solo makes your mixes wider than the speakers.
Soundhack Freesound Bundle. Haven’t had the time to try this yet, but some of it looks cool.
Digidesign of course have the free Bomb Factory plug-ins, Xpand! and Structure Free.
Toontrack Solo and EZplayer Free. Drums galore.
Native Instruments Kore Player for sample packs.
Massey Massey Tools. Note that this is not the ‘regular’ Massey plug-ins.
Ohm Force Frohmage is a free filter plug-in.
Nomad Factory have a free bundle as J~P noted.

What about the tremolo, phaser and sweeper by nomad factory (http://nomadfactory.com/products/discontinued/free_bundle.html)
Actually not bad at all. :)

    Thanks. Adding it now :)

I am actually getting rid of a lot of plugins. Just try to keep on to the ones I really really like and have a “plug out” folder that keeps the rest for those few occasions I actually need them. But in the period when I tried to get as many cool plug ins as possible I found that Fxpasion VST to RTAS was my best friend when it came to free plug ins. I just love the digital fishphones fish fillets package for instance. You can do MUCH worse than those and still pay a lot of money. The compressor for instance is among the most versatile (sound wise) I have ever seen. Just wanted to mention that to make my point that VST to RTAS is probably one of the best “cheap” programs you can buy… (plus earlier versions of kompakt and kontakt actually run better as VST>RTAS than the original RTAS version)

Cool, I remember seeing bx_solo a while back, but had forgotten all about it…

The brainworx link is actually http://www.brainworx-music.de/

  6. stiff says:

Thanks for pointing that out. Fixed the link.

could you please point out, what’s useable about bx_solo. you can only listen to either M or S or L or R, so it is not even useable as MS matrix (which btw is now a part of the free massey tools). I personally had the impression, that bx_solo is mere bs. sorry to be ruff, but I am bit ennerved by brainworks. in their infosheet for bx control they give the impression, as if they had invented MS personally and the lo-cut filter for the monifying the bass content especially, which in the analog world is well known for example from ADT desks for more than 20 years (they called it elliptical filter).

  8. stiff says:

Matthias. Certainly they haven’t invented M/S! Anyway, try bx_solo on a stereo track or submix as a widener.

  9. Guy Sigsworth says:

Don’t forget Digidesign Structure Free. If you don’t need your softsampler to do all kinds of fancy things and have complex multieffects, Structure Free works fine.
