Dr Bob’s Rx Backup

Bob has not only made Skootch - the window manager, but also Rx - a backup program for Pro Tools. Here’s what he has to say about it.

Dr. Bob’s Rx Backup is a data backup application, with some interesting new additions. Some of these new features were created for one specific market; that being a recording studio that uses Digidesign Pro Tools running on Windows XP or Vista.

A brief description of the most important features of Dr. Bob’s Rx Backup

1) Backup to any disk media. CD or DVD media of any kind (CD-R, CD-RW, DVD+/-R, DVD+/-RW, DVD-RAM), hard drive, network drive, pen drive, etc. ATAPI, USB, or 1394. If it has a drive letter, you can use it.

2) Intelligent incremental backup. Reuse of backup disk space for changed files (on rewritable disks only).

3) High speed. Faster than tape backups. (System speed dependant.)

4) Multiple methods of data compression, for specific kinds of data. Includes a lossless data compression for audio, which commonly achieves an average reduction of around 50%.

5) Background continuous backup of new audio files while Pro Tools is running (recording, for instance). Does not reduce available disk or CPU bandwidth to Pro Tools.

6) Optional direct copy backup mode for creation of cross-platform (i.e. Macintosh) compatible backups

If you want to try Rx Backup, just shoot Bob a email, and also consider making a small donation.
