Pro Tools only plug-ins a thing of the past?
A while back it came out that McDSP and Massey, two of the last companies that makes Pro Tools only plug-ins, would make AU versions as well. Yesterday rumors started floating that both of these companies had ditched those plans (which of course started a whole new set of rumors about Digidesign being an evil empire and that the latest ICON would actually be more powerful than the Deathstar).
Massey indeed confirmed in an email and on his website that the AUs had been thrown in the bin. Mr McDowell at McDSP on the other hand simply said it wasn’t true. Or in his own words “Boy that would be news to me. And that guy we hired from Apple might be bummed too”.
This issue has got nothing to do with Digidesign taking over the world. As a user base we have commended Steven Massey for bringing us excellent plug-ins at a very affordable prices. As a ‘one man band’ he cannot be expected to develop plug-ins for every platform out there. He has presumably made a ‘cost benefit v. time’ decision and decided it will take too much time and effort to port his plug-ins over to AU. Companies like McDSP and others are large enough to hire specialists to do the port which is fine.

Oh shit. Massey porting to AU was the last thing I needed to hear in order to go Logic 8. And I’m very glad I did, indeed. I’ve been so much more productive with Logic. So it looks as though Massey plugins has to go now. Good bye. Never should have invested in one man company anyway no matter the quality of the stuff it makes.

I would rather invest in a one-man company with talent than to invest into a large with so-so products. Don’t get me wrong, but I think with all the long years of waiting, this logic release is a mediocre product. Of course imho, and for the record, I have never been a logic fan.

Nothing wrong with investing in a one man company. Especially when he makes some of the best plug-ins available.
