No Vista support for Pro Tools until winter

You might already have seen this on Digidesigns website, but I thought I should post about it anyway because it seemed a bit “hidden away” to me.

Yes, sorry Windows users, if you want to go Vista before winter (that could mean next year) you’ll have to do it without Pro Tools. The original intent was to have Pro Tools Vista ready by summer.

Here’s the link to the article at Digidesign.

There are 44 kickass comments ~ what do you think?

  1. No serious Pro Tools user has reasons to switch to Vista.

The only ones who want Vista support are the low level beginner clients who don’t know how to install an OS and just bought a new HP laptop bundled with Vista, for their brand new MBox Mini because they didn’t read the fine print in the digi compatibility documentation…

By Jonathan Grand ~ August 25, 2007 kl 3:13 pm

  2. Scratch that, most beginner users don’t know what to do to their money, so instead of MBox Mini they got themselves a nice Digi 003 but they’re still looking in the manual to figure out what “Gain” means.

And of course, a $3000 Neumann mic because their aunt told them those were the best, and they had the money to buy it because they just got promoted to middle management in a company where they are overpaid for a job way beyond their competence level.

That’s the kind of people who are concerned about having Vista compatibility. Oh, how important they are to the audio market stability…

  3. LOL! Jealous? ;)

    By stiff ~ August 25, 2007 kl 5:38 pm

  4. Oh yes that’s a tremendously reasonable explanation and everything. Jealous. Of course. Right. Whatever

By Jonathan Grand ~ August 25, 2007 kl 10:22 pm

  5. Well, I am… I could use a $3000 Neumann mic!

  6. audio market stability?
    are you serious?

    you know nothing about music

    By sofsosei ~ August 26, 2007 kl 11:26 am

  7. Yeah, I don’t know much about music. Still, I know a lot more than you do. AAHAHAHAHAHHH

By Jonathan Grand ~ August 26, 2007 kl 7:39 pm

  8. It may be more important what happens outside of Pro Tools - at the Desktop. Navigation in OSX is so much easier than in Windows and Spotlight just puts searching in Windows in the grave, until Vista. It’s at least usable by comparison now. And don’t get me started on Windows drive letter assignment nonsense. Vista still isn’t OSX, but it’s a lot closer in some respects.

  9. Yes but the mouse pointer tracking in OS X still sucks to a point where it becomes unusable.

  14. Not sure what every one is Gritching about. I got protools working under Vista and it runs more stable than it did on my XP workstaion. You just have to know what you are doing.

  15. Found out how to run pro tools in vista ..use the compatibility wizard that came with vista…it should work im trying it now so we’ll see

    By Cameron ~ October 15, 2007 kl 1:45 pm

  16. That’s good news. Let us know how it works out Cameron.

    By stiff ~ October 15, 2007 kl 1:52 pm

  17. Mr Grand you are a cranky guy. Just like they used to tell you in kindergarten–you were a beginner one day. The thing that bugs me about protools people (and I am one) is that they start feeling better about themselves because they are computer savvy (read: geeks), rather than being great musical creators…

    By B-fore ~ October 16, 2007 kl 3:02 pm

  18. Cameron -

I tried this, and it seemed to work (it actually let me install it…) but now, the app won’t actually run. I wanted to un-install it to try a second time - maybe I had messed something up the first time, I don’t know, but it wouldn’t even let me uninstall it (again reverting to the fact that it won’t run without XP SP2). It also would not let me overwrite the install.. Little ticked at the moment.

  19. I ACTUALLY WENT TO SCHOOL FOR RECORDING, AND KNOW MOST EVERYTHING BOUT PRO TOOLS. FOR SERIOUS USE, THIS IS NOT AN ISSUE, BUT FOR PEOPLE WHO BUY THE MBOX, THIS IS A PROBLEM. WHO WANTS TO RELOAD THEIR ENTIRE MUSIC AND REDOWNLOAD FLASH, AND ADOBE READER, AND ALL THE OTHER CRAP YOU HAVE TO GO THROUGH WHEN YOU INSTALL A NEW OS. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE VISTA PATCH COME OUT SOON, OR i WILL LIKELY SWITCH TO A DIFF. PROGRAM. AFTER ALL PT IS GREAT, BUT FOR SIMPLE HOME RECORDING ALL MOST PEOPLE WANT IS SOMETHING THAT WORKS.

  21. Not that I run Windows, but if anyone got Pro Tools running under Vista please share the process.

  22. For those of us middle managers with a new HP laptop and an Mbox, I’ve got the solution.

You can shrink the Vista partition using the Vista DVD, create a second partition and load a fresh copy of XP onto the second partition… hence giving you the option to dual boot either XP for when you’re ready to lay down some music. And if you’re working on other things, you guessed it… boot the Vista. There’s a little more to it than that, but it’s working on my machine no problem. See http://apcmag.com/5485/dualbooting_vista_and_xp for a pretty good step by step.

For those of you with Vista Ultimate and probably 2G RAM or more, you can also download MS Virtual PC for free and load XP as a virtual OS. This is going to memory intensive so see aforementioned 2G RAM and up. I was hoping to go this route personally so that I didn’t have to reboot to get into a new OS, but alas, my Vista Home Premium is not compatible.

Either that or wait a few more months and the monkeys over at digidesign will get it together.

  23. Hi I just got a new PC with Windows Vista and have bought the MBox2. Would like to know how to be able to make them compatible?

Email me at auralvanity@aol.com, please. Thank you!!!

    By Nick ~ November 19, 2007 kl 3:00 am

  24. Yeah, not all of us trying to figure out how to run PT on Vista are total goons who don’t know what we are doing. Some of us are regular people with real jobs trying to get some work done on our new computers. If you are any type of audio engineer, especially now, you should understand that.

    By Brian ~ December 3, 2007 kl 7:32 pm

  25. For the middle road know how guy… It seems that you can not buy a new computer with XP, only Vista (like I did months ago) and while waiting for Digi I still can not use my new laptop for PT. Is there a detailed for the average compuer geek to get walked through the fixes (partitions, reboots?) that is being mentioned here?

  28. for those of you who cannot uninstall early versions of pro tools on vista and run into the error message that says must have windows xp sp2, just put your pro tools cd rom back into the drive. when it runs, it will ask you if you want to modify, repair, or remove. choose remove and that should take care of your problem.

  29. i am considering getting pro tools for my home studio i use alot of differnt programms to create music and through my research i found that i can do almost everything that the programm does with the other programms i use. so my question is what is it this program has to offer me that isnt offerd in the programms i already use.

alot of people tell me is just easier to use but i dont have trouble getting my other programms to do what i want them to do.

i guess i just dont wanna spend the money to do what i already can.

    any feedback would be appreciated

  30. Hey durtey slopez,

To me it’s all a matter of work flow. I have many apps for audio and they all do the job. They do, however, do it differently. I like the way Pro Tools works, and to me it’s unparalleled in pure audio editing. Furthermore I think some of the RTAS and TDM only plug-ins, such as Massey, McDSP and even Digidesign are truly top notch. While there are other AU and/or VST plug-ins that can do similar things and surely can give you good results, I just happen to like how these plug-ins work.

Try to borrow a unit, or in any way try Pro Tools first. Some think it looks basic if they come from Logic or Cubase and don’t dig deeper into it. Others really like the clean interface, the short-cut-for-everything-approach and the Pro Tools only functions such as Beat Detective. Elastic audio, BTW, is one reason to certainly check out Pro Tools at the moment.

Bottom line, it’s all about work flow. Pick one you like and go with it!

  31. Would anyone care to enlighten me on how you were able to actually install PT to a Vista machine (without dual-booting XP)? Thanks!

  34. It’s sad. I came here to learn since I am a new pro tools user, and all you have done is mock people like me when we come to a site like this to figure out what we don’t know.

    By Pete ~ March 31, 2008 kl 4:27 pm

  35. Well… sorry to break it to you (or at least some of you), my Macbook Pro just died and I had to finish a production. The only thing I could get my hands on in my part of the world was a brand new HP Pavillion DV9000 notebook running Vista Home Premium with 2 Gigs of internal DRAM. Just installed PT 7.4 LE and it works without ANY problems!

I also transferred my session to it (lucky for me I backed up everything on an external harddrive), and I’m finishing that deadline-heavy project even as we speak…

My client happy, me happy. I’ll be getting rid of that laptop as soon as my Macbook returns repaired, or maybe I’ll just keep it just in case…

  39. Yes yes… Pro-Tools 7.4.2 works fine on Vista. Here’s the real question: what good does that do if NONE of digidesign’s interfaces (LE systems) are vista compatible? What is one to do?—-> go m-powered? I don’t think so.

Now here’s your chance to prove me wrong. Pleas prove me wrong. I like vista on my laptop and really don’t want to dual boot or make the backtrack to xp. I’m also not about to drop the money on a new mactop either. I’m even thinking about an ebay’ed desktop for a few bills just to get through the fall.

By smoking pocket ~ September 2, 2008 kl 1:58 am

  40. >Pro-Tools 7.4.2 works fine on VistaNONE of digidesign’s interfaces (LE systems) are vista compatible<

Could you please explain how the interfaces are not Vista compatible?

By digidesign tech support ~ September 4, 2008 kl 7:38 pm

  41. P.S. 7.4.2 is for Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5.x) and 7.4 is the latest for XP/Vista.

  42. PLEASE someone tell me how to get protools LE on my stupid vista laptop… i’ve had 2 semesters of music technology, sold 1000+ CDs, and recorded plenty of songs myself with various recording software…. i had my old laptop since 2005 and needed a new one before my deployment… i’d rather have a pc for verstility so i had to buy one w/ stupid vista… i don’t want to buy another copy of XP… yes i have experience with computers… thats my job in the army… i just bought protools LE… it won’t install… HELP!

  44. My Dell XP laptop died a few months agao and they replaced it for free with a brand new XPS. Bad news, Vista is on it. I don’t care what anyone says, Pro Tools DOES NOT WORK PROPERLY with Vista. I can’t get through an entire song without getting playback errors. I’ve even put 4GB RAM in this and it runs slower than my 2GB XP machine. I’m seriously thinking of buying an XP laptop off ebay for $500. Digidesign needs to fix this problem since Microsoft obviously doesn’t care about their crappy 6 billion dollar mistake they call Vista.
